One-Night Show in Buenos Aires

The legendary Academy Award nominee will return to the Argentine stage on March 27 with a production inspired by the literature of Roberto Bolaño.

The renowned American actor and director John Malkovich is set to return to Argentina  to present “El Infame Ramírez Hoffman,” a unique one-night performance scheduled for March 27 at the Teatro Ópera.

The show is a multidisciplinary production that fuses literature, live music, and drama. It is inspired by the work of the late Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, specifically focusing on the story of a fictional aviator and poet who serves the machinery of state repression during the Chilean dictatorship. Through dark parody, the play explores the chilling intersection between artistic creation and moral atrocity.

Key Details of the Performance:

  • Date & Venue: March 27 at Teatro Ópera (Avenida Corrientes).

  • Music: Malkovich will be joined on stage by a musical trio led by pianist Anastasya Terenkova, alongside violinist Andrej Bielow and bandoneonist Fabrizio Colombo.

  • The Score: The live soundtrack features a sophisticated mix of works by Astor Piazzolla, Antonio Vivaldi, Erik Satie, and Alberto Iglesias.

  • Themes: The production delves into the political memory of Latin America, particularly the trauma of the 1973 coup in Chile and the nature of state terrorism.

Malkovich’s Connection to Argentina

This is not the actor’s first deep dive into Argentine culture. During his 2016 visit, Malkovich moved local audiences by performing a reading of Ernesto Sábato’s prologue to the Nunca Más (Never Again) report—the landmark document detailing the disappearances during Argentina’s last military dictatorship. Malkovich has long expressed an interest in Argentine literature, even attempting at one point to adapt Sábato’s novel On Heroes and Tombs for the screen.

About the Author

Roberto Bolaño (1953–2003) remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary Spanish-language literature. His works, which often deal with exile, violence, and the dark underbelly of 20th-century history, serve as the perfect foundation for Malkovich’s intense and avant-garde theatrical style.
