Dow, the world’s leading material science company, has signed an agreement with PCR for acquiring 9MW of wind power, which will enable the Bahia Blanca industrial complex to increase its use of renewable energy by more than 40 per cent, boosting environmental benefits for the country and the planet.
The five-year agreement with PCR’s subsidiary, Luz De Tres Picos, will come into effect from February 2024, being the electricity supplied the El Mataco III and Vivoratá wind farms, located in the province of Buenos Aires.
On this point, Matías Campodónico, president of Dow Argentina, said: “In environmental matters, we are committed to being a carbon neutral company by 2050 and, complementarily, we are also working to expand the frontiers of renewable energy.
We are one of the top 20 global corporations that use the most clean and renewable energy, and, in Argentina, 20 per cent of the Bahia Blanca complex’s electricity is contractually guaranteed through a wind source.
In addition, based on the agreement with PCR and other spot purchase agreements, we will even be able to exceed that capacity”.
Similarly, Campodónico pointed out that “all this effort is linked to the ultimate goal of leveraging on the circular economy, and the revaluation of plastic as a material that has the least impact on the generation of greenhouse gases, compared to other alternatives for industrial and commercial use”.
Martin Federico Brandi, CEO of PCR general manager of PCR, emphasized the importance of the contract with Dow, which reinforces the company’s growth strategy as a renewable energy supplier, and commented: “This demonstrates that, it is not only a competitive source of energy, it is, at the same time, an important company tool for carbon footprint reduction, thus taking a long-term sustainable perspective”.
The agreement with PCR complements the one with Central Puerto, through which 20% of the Bahía Blanca operation is supplied by wind energy, consolidating its place among the 20 companies using the cleanest energy, in an important step towards decarbonization and in line with the goals set out in the Paris Agreement to curb climate change by 2050.
Claudia Schaeffer, Director of Energy Business, Climate Integration, said: “As a major energy consumer and supplier of technologies, essential to a low-carbon economy, we recognize our role and are committed to being part of the transition to decarbonization.
Argentina is rich in renewable energy resources and has the potential to diversify its matrix with reliability and affordability. We are proud to sign the agreement with PCR, a key milestone in our decarbonization strategy, and to increase the share of renewable energy to more than 40 per cent at our Bahia Blanca Complex, one of our largest facilities in Latin America.
