The appearance of the largest animal on Earth within the “Patagonia Azul” Provincial Park marks a scientific milestone and underscores the region’s importance for marine conservation.
A blue whale has been recorded off the coast of Chubut for the first time in history within the boundaries of the Patagonia Azul Provincial Park. Local environmental authorities have described the event as a landmark moment for biodiversity in the region.
While blue whales had previously been documented in open Argentine waters, there were no confirmed records within the specific limits of this protected coastal park until now.
The Discovery
The sighting took place during a technical monitoring expedition led by conservationists from the NGO Rewilding Argentina. The team was originally focused on identifying humpback and sei whales when they noticed a massive, unfamiliar silhouette breaking the surface.
“We came across this whale surfacing, but this one was different – it was gigantic, far larger than any we had ever seen,” said biologist Tomás Tamagno, a member of the expedition. The team approached the animal with caution to confirm the identification and managed to capture high-quality photographs before the whale quickly headed toward open waters.
Scientific Significance
The individual is believed to be an Antarctic blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus intermedia), a subspecies that can reach up to 30 meters in length and weigh as much as 140 tonnes.
Key points about the sighting:
-
Ecological Value: Its presence reinforces the importance of the Cabo Dos Bahías sector as a potential feeding ground or migratory corridor.
-
Conservation Status: Blue whales are classified as endangered. Commercial whaling in the 20th century decimated their population to just 2% of its original size.
-
Environmental Protection: Experts emphasize that securing protected corridors is vital to prevent ship collisions, one of the main threats to these giants today.
The discovery has generated excitement in the scientific community, as coastal sightings of blue whales in Chubut are extremely exceptional, providing new data for the study of their migratory patterns in the South Atlantic.
